7th Annual Cops 'N Kids Holiday Book Give-Away - BIGGER than ever!

In partnership with the Julia Burney-Witherspoon
Cops 'N Kids Reading Center and the State Street Civic Association, Merchants once again opened it's warehouse to host the Holiday Book Give-Away.

Over 60,000 books were given away to the 3,000 plus Racine area children who attended this event.

Santa and Mrs. Claus were on hand to spread the holiday spirit of giving and to listen to Christmas lists and take photos with the children. Photos are available on http://news.racinepost.com/2009/12/give-kids-what-they-want-and-theyll.html

Thanks to the generous donations from Educator's Credit Union, Merchants Moving & Storage, Johnson Bank, Integrated Risk Solutions and the United Way of Racine County, 110 children were processed through the Safe Assured Child ID program at no charge to their parents. A special thank you to Marilyn Pelky of the Volunteer Center of Racine, who recruited and organized our volunteers and Dave Voss of the Racine Police Athletic Association.

Our partners include many men and women from the Racine Police Department, the Milwaukee FBI office, the Racine Fire Department and the Racine County Sheriff's Department who autographed the books and assisted in so many positive ways.

We also need to thank the large number of Racine companies, churches, agencies and service clubs who made significant contributions to the Holiday Book Giveaway.
These include: McDonalds, Culvers, The Lighted School House, the Racine Public Library, Treasures Media, the 21st Century Prep School Orchestra, the greater Mt. Eagle Baptist Church & Choir, Racine Lighthouse Ministries, Boy Scout Troop 181, Barnes & Noble, the Junior League, the Safe Kids Coalition, the United Way of Racine County, The Pentecost Lutheran Church, The Racine Post, The Racine Journal Times, Case-New Holland, Youth As Resources (YAR) and Patricia Choca and her Labradoodle "Toby" of the Reading Education Assistance Dogs Program (R.E.A.D.)

Jim & Julia wish to extend their deepest thanks to all who were involved this year and helped to make our 7th Annual Holiday Book Giveaway a busy, positive and festive event. Merry Christmas to you all!

It is the mission of the Cops 'N Kids Reading Center to enable and empower children to strive toward the fundamental successes in life through recognition of the importance of reading. The children who participate in the program will also experience positive interaction with police officers in order to develop a more trusting relationship with law enforcement.

To make a donation or volunteer please contact the reading center at 262-632-1606. Donations can also be brought to the Reading Center Monday through Thursday from 3-6 p.m. at 800 Villa Street, Racine.

Julia Burney-Witherspoon founded Cops 'N Kids in 1997 and received a "Use Your Life Award" in 2000 on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She was also named a "Person of the Year on ABC world News Tonight in 2008. A 17 year member of the Racine police force, her vision began as an idea to distribute books to kids in high risk neighborhoods to promote stronger community ties and help promote literacy.

As moving & storage companies are uniquely equipped to provide trucks for pickup and delivery and warehouse facilities for donated books, it is Merchants' vision to see moving companies across America be involved with a local chapter of Cops 'N Kids. For more information contact our President, Jim Eastman.
